‘Occurrences of Abundance’, an exhibition dedicated to BioArt, aims to transform abstract research postulates into a tangible and shared experience. The artists Axinia Peycheva, Antoni Rayzhekov, Marta Dzhurina and Pepa Ivanova incorporate insights from art, science, and philosophy, generating an unusual confrontation on a wide range of issues related to human existence.
The project examines the emerging potential of biotechnology in combination with other disciplines and domains of development. In the contemporary world, it is impossible to envisage life sciences beyond the concepts of political economy. Economic growth, productivity and value creation are seen as a relationship between state-funded basic research, the market of new technologies, and financial capital. The consequences of these changes are explored through an interdisciplinary approach, taking into account artistic responses, suggestions and reflections, as well as relevant discourses and practices in the sciences, in order to develop a critical understanding of the challenging issues relating to the interdependence of economics and biology.
The exhibition coincides with the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, which is having an immense impact on individuals, communities and societies, on culture, economy, ecology, and other domains. We are witnessing a remarkable interaction, on a global scale, between the complex and dynamic manifestations of current coronavirus activity and the equally complex and dynamic economic processes.
With the support of the National Culture Fund, Goethe-Institut Bulgarien and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium in Sofia.
